How do I prevent slipping on hardwood stairs?

I have a long flight of stairs to climb (high ceilings so the 2nd floor is higher than the average home) that is slippery and made of hardwood. Any suggestions to prevent slipping and sliding and breaking bones? I don't want to replace the hardwood but thought of putting in some carpeting in the middle of the steps. How do I go about doing this or are there any other suggestions? Thank you.

Either a runner that goes all the way down the staircase or a layer of clear, anti-slip spray should do the trick!

Carpet.
Probably the simplest option would be individual carpet stair treads. You can purchase them at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. & install them yourself with the included instructions. Installing a runner would probably require a professional to install.

A full length carpet runner over good padding will provide greater protection in event of falls. You have have it over the entire width of the stairs, or have one cut and bound to fit the greater width (will not cover entire stair width).
