Plan on spreading 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches of sand beneath the pavers; you'll also use it to fill the gaps between them. The sand should be spread over a 4- to 12-inch layer of crushed stone, which has been tamped into place. Once the sand is installed, moisten it and tamp it into place so it won't settle further. How much stone and sand you use depends on the type of soil you have, as well as how much wear the pavers will get. Use more stone and sand in soft clay soils than you would in hard or sandy soils. A driveway covered with pavers needs a much deeper sub-surface than paths that get only light foot traffic.
Hi Dennis, you'll need about 4" (10cm) of crushed stone and 1" (2.5cm) of coarse sand as to lay the patio pavers on
3 inches then small pea gravel
