How do I make a cornice that isn’t fancy?
The cornace I inherited from the previous owner is a beautiful blue satin swag but that’s not me. I’d like to use the same board but don’t have a good idea for a country look that isn’t a gathered valance.

Just recover what you already have. Take it down, measure for fabric and head over to the fabric shop. Purchase extra fabric to cover a lamp shade, a pillow or two, make a table runner to repeat the pattern in the room.
Cut the cornace if it has a curvy shape. Choose a soft colored country pattern, like a toile so it's not too hokey. You can just staple the fabric over the batting that was already on it.
Its not hard ,, You need to DE-construct what is on there now. Get rid of the blue satin, save the batting, and cover fabric to use for patterns if needed. If the boards are rectangle simply find new fabric to go with your decor. Making sure you have plenty to cover several inches over the back and ends. Start with the batting, lay the board on the batting, pull batting over to the back and staple . Pulling taught, as you go, its best to work from the center of each side to the corners. alternation sides as you staple. Checking every few staples to make sure there are no puckers and its even. Once you are done with that you repeat with the fabric of choice, Its best (or easier) to have help with this part. Pulling it snug as you staple. Once you have the sides done. get close to the corners make sure the corners lay flat as you staple. Finally cover with a basic cotton to hide the staples. lastly covere the lining fabric with trim, often a braid.. stapled with smaller staples..
I ussed a med blue mattress ticking stripe fabric for my country kitchen decor years back.. looked great, later I found some picnic table cloth checked fabric in med. blue.. also looked cute for the country look..
Some ideas. You should be able to find something you like.
