How can I have glass or acrylic spindles made for my stairs?
They have an colonial look to them now but I want to go more contemporary, and do something different.

Go to a glass shop. They usually also stock pleii-glass and could probably make you spindles. That sounds like a fabulous idea and will totally change the look of your staircase. Love your idea!
Giulli,
I don't know if you can have them made out of glass or acrylic! Acrylic scratches so badly and glass is too dangerous.
Whatever you decide you like, make sure you check out ordinance requirements for spacing in your area.
We have an old house and a deck that was added on years ago. The ordinances have changed from 7" between spindles to 4" between spindles. That would prove to be a major project. The photo shows how we fixed it. People are running fencing sideways for a contemporary look and we were given some cedar planks so we fixed the problem. I love the look. (The open spaces are for our pup to stand guard! We can close them up later!
One of the most contemporary styles today is with the cables running horizontally.
Here are some photos

BTW, People are putting such cables vertically from ceiling to floor for a contemporary see through wall to separate spaces. We just had the deck treated so we have to wait a month before putting the furniture back in place.
Have you thought of using sheets of plexi-glass? Have it cut to size to fit each stair tread and install vertically (like a glass shower enclosure) with only a 2 or 3 inch gap between them. That should work for safety and visibility. You could use a darker stain on the railings as well as the stair treads to 'frame' your work.
The same look could be accomplished with safety glass but would be much more expensive.
Check with your local glass shop or home improvement store.
How about mirror spray paint? It may not look great on the style of spindles you have now, but if you found something cheaper to replace them with (perhaps PVC pipe) the mirror effect would be very modern.
