How to clean & replace rubber flaps on opening of garbage disposal?
The rubber flaps on the top opening where the garbage disposal is are not "flapped out" and are super dirty with black yunk underneath each one. They just hang straight down so don't work as a filter as intended. Have tried cleaning out the garbage disposal but with the underside so dirty not sure what would work.

Hi Claudia, here is a good video on how to change the flap. I watched it to make sure it had useful info that was easy to understand.

I would think that you could check your disposal manual and see if you can order that part separately as I have never seen them in the stores. If you can the power has to be turned off to the disposal and you have to disconnect it from the plumbing and then drop it from the sink. That part is a round rubber part that fits into the opening of your drain and by friction until you put the disposal back up in place. The disposal tightens into position making a seal so that the rubber part doesn't leak. Then of course you have to hook all the plumbing and wiring back up. Test the unit to make sure that it doesn't leak.
If your not handy or don't have a family member that is I would recommend contacting a professional. Will cost more but less chance of installation and leaking issues.
It is not a filter but intended to keep gunk from flying back out/up from disposal when it is in use. After replacement keep it clean to prevent replacement, I scrub mine inside/outside whenever I run it and am cleaning out the sink itself.I use scrub sponge and Dawn on it

I would think you could just replace the whole drain. Just go to HOME depot and ask for a replacement disposal drain. Surely you wouldn't have to replace the disposal.
