I was told in an article in the local paper from a gardening expert that a paper plant would bloom shortly after Christmas. Mine after a year of being in the ground , mulched and watered regularly during summer. does not respond well to cold weather. Loses its leaves and buds out but buds wilt in cold weather (freezing or above, I cover it below freezing).

Paper bush is suited to the Middle, Lower, and Coastal South (USDA Zones 7-9), although with protection it might get by the Upper South (USDA Zone 6). Give it light shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soil containing lots of organic matter. It has no serious pests and pruning is seldom needed. Water during summer droughts.

It does best in a acidic moist soil. Water regularly during summer and fall to ensure the soil remains consistently moist. Avoid moving the bush once it is planted, as it is touchy until well established. During the first winter, it is advisable to provide protection from the cold.

The plant does best in full sun and because the flowers are susceptible to frost damage, a south or west-facing wall is an ideal planting location.
