Lighting and also Shadow effects to make a Square area in the center of the ceiling look inset. Sorta like the Buttons on Windows has a Gray Outline, and a White Base to make they look 3D, it is same.
I did a painting technique that turned out amazing. Choose color. Buy a gal of FLAT & a gal of SATIN. Buy 2-3" wide painters TAPE. U will be placing the tape vertically 1 ft apart. The weight of the roll keeps the tape straight. First roll on the satin, then when completely dry, place the tape on the wall. Then roll the flat totally over the entire wall. After it dries, U remove the tape carefully. You then have subtle verticle stripes that gives the illusion of a taller wall. It looks the same color looking straight on,but move a few inches & U see the stripes. It's very effective to make a room seem taller. I only did 2 walls but it was enough for the illusion to do the job. It's a little time consuming, but is well worth it. Good luck...this really works!
Hang your curtains very near the ceiling. You might have to make your own from drop cloths, fabric or sheets
