Go to Home Depot or Lowe's they have everything you need. Ask someone in the plumbing dept. You probably need a new flapper.
You need the kit(toilet closet guts) either adjusted or replaced. If you are handy sometimes it's just adjusting the float so the flap closes. Or maybe the chain that attaches the float to the flap may also be too long and is getting trapped under the flap. Which keeps the toilet running.
First open the water closet. Flush and watch. Look at the black rubber that is connected to the chain. Lift it and see if there is debris around the lip of the rubber and hole. Feel the rubber to see if it is old and deteriorating. If so replace with kit mentioned above. Trick is to learn how it works. While there clean the water closet.
The flapper inside the tank is the usual problem. You can just replace that or kits are made to replace the whole works. Not expensive and found in the plumbing department of a big box home improvement store.
