How to build a interesting free standing shelving unit?
I have this spot in my living room about 6' long with about 10-12" in depth that I want to build a bookcase that can be configured more than one way. The height could be up to 3". I would like to store some LP's, artwork and other items on the shelves. I am looking for a funky, creative, industrial look. I was thinking of the galvanised steel poles that come in various lengths that screw into a round fitting, glass bricks and just plain old wood blocks. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for any help.

Whatever you choose consider attaching it to the wall. Two screws can do the trick and save you some heartache too.
My mom built a bookshelf out of what looks like redwood planks and refused bricks that they had over after building their house using them and the built in fireplaces with bookcases and space for TV's, How many bricks you use depends on how tall you want each shelf and how many shelves you want. You can divide the boards so that you can reconfigure them to different looks. I now have that book shelf in my house in my library/backroom.
