You should use an exterior marine spar varnish. Two coats. It would be helpful to keep your bench out of constant hot sun. The less time it spends in the hot hot sun beating down on it--the longer your finish will last.
Helmsman Spar Urethane. Used on boats.

It depends on what you want it to look like. I have had marine varnish peel up on aged pressure treated wood after 2 years. I find solid exterior stain holds up and looks good for several years, but it looks like paint.
