Hi Diane. I'm Cindy. If space allows, I recommend using large items rather than a bunch of little nick nack's. There are great items in the garden section of big box stores. And home improvement stores like Home Depot or Lowe's. Nestle a few artificial plants up there too. All of this together will make a focal point in your kitchen. Good luck Diane.
Just keep in mind that whatever you put up there you will need to climb up there and dust now and then. So keep it simple and something with enough weight so that a feather duster won't knock it over.
I think that adding molding from the cabinet tops to the ceiling looks good. Gives the cabinets a very finished look. That also takes care of your problem concerning what to put up there. https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/skills-and-know-how/carpentry-and-woodworking/how-to-install-cabinet-crown-molding
Definitely put large items. You could put seasonal items up , that way you can change and clean at the same time. Anyway here’s some visual ideas. I like the idea of putting some lights up, fairy lights are easy.
Diane...Decorative vases or pitchers. Use easels and chart boards or pictures. You can include greenery or flowers. Antiques are perfect for looking at but not touching.
