How do you use chalk paint to make a real drawing chalk board?
I want to make a message board out of a tray. I've never used chalk paint but I have purchased a small bottle of black "chalk" paint. I see that using chalk paint on furniture has become quite popular; does that mean you can use real drawing chalk on the pieces you painted? If so, does that mean I can use it to make a "chalk" message board that can be erased over and over?

Chalk paint for furniture is different than chalkboard paint. Chalk paint for furniture has either Plaster of Paris, baking soda, or mineral powder mixed into the paint so in theory no sanding, or priming is needed. Chalkboard paint is made to turn anything into a chalkboard to write on.

You can buy "chalkboard" paint to paint on anything and use with chalk. I have also used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Graphite which can be used on furniture with a sealer or as chalkboard paint. Personally I would stick to the "chalkboard" paint.
Chalk style paint is different than chalk board paint. I wouldn't recommend using chalk paint as a chalk board. But you definitely can paint a lot of things with chalkboard paint if you want to make something into a chalkboard and write all over it.
I have used Graphite Annie Sloan Chalk Paint as a chalkboard... it works. I do however like to use regular "chalkboard" paint better... it is darker and works much better.
Chalk paint is water soluble. I have removed drips with just a damp wash cloth, so using it as a base to write messages on won't work. Use chalkboard paint or buy a board and cut it down to fit your tray.
You need the black spray paint made especially for making a chalkboard. You can spray it on most any smooth wooden structure. I have known parents to spray it on a wall or even a filing cabinet for smaller children to draw on the chalk board. The popular "chalk paint" you see advertised is a white wash type of finish for making a decor like farm house decor. Do not confuse it with paint to make a chalk board. They are two separate types of paint. Ask for chalk paint to cover or make a chalk board like for school. The home improvement folks will know what you need.
