How do I plant in the desert?
I want to plant something colorful in my back yard. It is very small and looks out onto the golf course. Nothing with thorns because of my grandchildren playing in such a small place. All I have are pots so nothing that requires a lot of water or maintenance thanks

Where in the Desert? I live in AZ & have huge gardens Are the pots full sun?semi shade, shade? Zinnias are colorful do well in pots, almost year round blooms and love the full sun some small varieties some tall ; another are Freesia they are bulbs have one of the best scents ever, full sun almost year round blooms;Snapdragons,Geraniums,Petunias,Daylilies. What about thornless Roses they can take the desert heat full sun Marigolds,Calendulas and some of the daisy varieties are only good early in year until the heat/sun gets really blazing they tend to get mites. Gillardias are good in sun/heat but if the kids get in the plants they have little hairs on them that can burn/sting/irritate skin. What about strawberries the kids can help with them & eat them. Everything in the desert needs lots of water especially if you want flowers. Thornless roses are actually relatively drought tolerant but they do need some water.maybe some tomatoes for kids to grow & eat
