To clean the stopper, you must disconnect it from the sink and pull it from the drain.

You disconnect the stopper from underneath the sink. New sinks have a thin aluminum piece of bendable metal that holds it to the lever you use to raise and lower it. Remove it by squeezing it until you can slide it off of the stem. Do the reverse to reinstall.
