How to make this picture more updated?
This I had 30 years ago, now I'm kind of sick of it, but I don't want to spend any money for decorations at all. What would make it more farmhouse style?

Frame it with rustic wood
I would "retire" it for a while and replace it with something more rustic. Design fads come and go and this piece may be better suited elsewhere at the moment but welcomed back in the future....when you are ready again to redecorate. It really is not suited for a farmhouse look.
it looks like a folding screen. is it covered with glass?
A piece of 'farmhouse themed" chintz, gingham or floral fabric print fabric
could be stretched over it and taped on the back if you want a fast, totally new look.
or go to salvation army second hand store and chose a framed print or painting or photo that you like to replace it for only few dollars.
i dont know what your idea of 'farmhouse style" is. If formed from the internet its probably rustic or country.
These fad terms confuse or make me laugh. I am descended from two farming families still on the land and their houses were styled french provincial and shakers style when they were first built. chickens, straw and weathered boards were in the barn. or beat up rusty anything. No rustic or country in those houses!
It's a beautiful piece of art. Get it checked out as it may be worth some money.
It appears to have a wood backing. If that’s right, turn the print to the wall, hang it back on the wall. Use the 3M tape to attach family pictures to make a gallery. Or postcards, things you treasure that tell a story. You could also use string stretched from one end to the other attached securely, use clothes pins to do the same thing. I know, sounds crazy, but farmhouse is personal and warm.
It will never be farmhouse style. Enhance its Oriental theme by painting the frame a shiny black. You may want to leave it where it is.
Decorating is for you. Not for your guests or friends. Make your home what you want. If you want to use these in a rustic frame.... do it. I think it will be awesome.
You can do the whole thing in a rustic frame... it would be a large.... or you could break them up and use a thin wood matte to cover the edges. If the look doesnt work, I agree with Fiddledd224, retire them for a while. Styles always come back around. I also agree they might be worth something.
I have a friend who does framing as a side job. She is great at what she does and has an eye for matting and framing to make the piece of art stand-out. Places like Hobby Lobby and Michael's often have framing specials. I would take it to have it redone and ask for their advice.
Hi Ann! That’s a lovely old print and I think you could absolutely fit it into a rustic/farmhouse style wall grouping. If it were me I would paint the edge in a gloss black which will help bring the colors of the print back to life. If you have some unused frames in the house go to the dollar store and buy some ferns or if you have feens on your property use them and press a couple of fronds under the glass. Then I would hang some wicker baskets to complete the grouping. I think that would look awesome! Good luck!!
I would never do anything to your Japanese wall panel screen. It is a work of art as is. Appears to be vintage. Hang on to it and enjoy it.
Oh love this!! I totally agree! Add a white washed barn wood frame! :)
