Douglas Hunt on Jun 22, 2012Gooseberries are an alternate host for a fungal disease called white pine blister rust. They are restricted in North Carolina and several other states. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture has regulations making it illegal to import or grow currant and gooseberry plants (the genus Ribes) in North Carolina because of this disease.
