Kathy is right, and you might want to try boiling water if in an area of the side walk or driveway.
Does it kill the plants
I use vinegar or salt.
Salt will kill anything. Follow it with water. The water will help the roots receive the salt quicker. Be careful with salt. It will kill anything it touches.
You could also cover it with newspaper weighed down with rocks or mulch.
