This article has several ideas with pictures. I love them! https://www.weareteachers.com/classroom-decoration-ideas-home/
Create a reading center/library with rugs, books, poufs, and a cozy lamp. If there is room, some cozy seating makes a huge difference! Check out the photos for inspo.
Library center! some lamps (instead of those harsh, fluorescent lights) a nice rug (on clearance at Marshalls or Walmart) and some big pillows (again, on clearance!)
Thank you teachers for all you do!
What do you mean by 'homey'? Do you mean bright and welcoming?
How many students do you have, and what is the size of the room?
Any way you can use material to make it feel homey. Many desks can’t hold enough so I made book holders that just had one big pocket to slip over the back of chairs when I taught. I used upholstery scraps and the kids could choose their own. (Kind of like a pillowcase with a pocket) I also had a couple of rocking chairs I put in a reading corner. Big pillows and even carpet squares to sit on. I also painted a couple of old wooden chairs that I painted kinda Dr Seuss looking and very colorful. The kids loved those.
I read the other suggestions and they all sound great. However, I would have a theme and use it a couple of years. Some I had were sunflowers, Bart Simpson, (when he first came out and was more G rated.) Bears, put the word out and parents are thrilled to donate. One of mine sat in a swing hanging from the ceiling. An old fashioned claw foot bathtub filled with pillows is a great reading spot. And one of the best, a western theme with a watering container and pillows. The key to being able to change often is resale, garage sales, donations, re purpose, etc. Good luck. You sound like an awesome teacher to care about the learning atmosphere.
