Most posts I've seen regarding this use hot water followed by baking soda in the drain followed by vinegar. I've used this and it works OK.
A more effective approach is to use a sink snake. They cost $2 at home depot. You remove the stopper, then run this little plastic barbed strap down it. Twist as you remove. I've used these and they are usually more effective than the baking soda and vinegar combo.
This tool works for me: https://amzn.to/2YneZrc
POUR DOWN ABOUT 1 /2 CUP OF BAKING SODA AND THEN TOP OFF WITH VINEGAR UNTIL YOU HEAR IT FIZZ. BE SURE TO PUT ENOUGH VINEGAR IN SO THAT IT REACHES THE TRAP. LET SIT FOR A WHILE AND THEN FLUSH WITH HOT WATER. IF THIS DOES NOT WORK THEN YOU MAY HAVE TO REMOVE THE TRAP AND CLEAN IT OUT.
Hi Bev,
I agree that a snake can sometimes be a faster solution, but not always. It depends on the location of the clog. We had an area that constantly clogged, but it was too far along the pipe for the snake. We used the baking soda and vinegar method several time and eventually got it cleared out. Once it was cleared out, we did maintenance on it regularly. Once a month we'd pour some baking soda into that drain followed by vinegar and let it sit for a while. Then we'd run hot water through the pipe. That made a huge difference. We now keep a box of baking soda and a bottle of plain white vinegar in every room that has a drain to make it super simple to clean out our drains regularly. Wishing you the best.
