I'm looking for a desk that will also work as bookcase/work area in my senior housing unit. Think TINY HOUSE LIVING. LOL

    Hi Sue,

The easiest way would be to find 2 book shelves/cases that are the right height for a desk then put a top on it. That top could be any kind of wood that would be the right size. Most home goods stores like Lowes, Home Depot, etc. will cut the wood so that it will be the right size. You could then paint or stain each part to be what you envision. Here's one that is a similar idea although it uses 3 book shelves/cases and is larger than you need.

Here's another idea if you have a closet that is not essential.

Here's one more that could be done with a short bookcase and a taller one turned sideways in a corner. I hope one of these ideas inspires you. Wishing you the best.

If you have 4ft, you can use,a letter size, file, cabinet off to one side then cut a nice board the depth of file cabinet x 4ft or whatever size you want. Add 2 legs for the opposite side of of the file cabinet. Now you got a desk. Now add a bookcase on top.

You can add a drop down to a full size bookcase that would make a secretary type desk. You will need hinges and chain on the side. I found a photo for an idea but it's a stock photo.

I would get one of those 6 or 9 square cubbies (about $45 at Home Depot or Lowe's), some "L" brackets, an IKEA-type parsons table. I would put the cubby on top of the table against the wall and attach it to the wall for safety with the "L" bracket.

Just so you know, average desk height varies from 27 to 29 inches, depending on your chair, and depending on if you’re going to be using a keyboard drawer separately from the desktop itself, which would normally be 2 inches lower .
