Use a good primer and depending on the color you want to change it to, you may want to use a tinted primer so you don't have to do extra coats of paint to cover the primer. Kilz has several tinted primers. Don't skimp on the primer or prepping. Any flaws will be highlighted (not covered) by paint. Good luck and post some pictures. We'd love to see before and after ones.
Since its wood, sand off sheen, prime with Oil based primer, lightly sand again then paint.
The shinier the finish the more prep needed. So depending what it has been sealed with is what matters more.Any primer will cover the dark stain but won't stick if it's sealed with polyurethane or such. So need to sand or strip it off depending what it is then primer then paint.
Clean with TSP then prime with Kilz or Zinsser and paint. That's what I did 20 years ago and have had no problems with it.
