Take your time, if you do it quick it will not look nice.
Hi Jennifer. First you start by cleaning the walls. I wipe them down with a wet rag and then vacuum the base boards and where the wall meets the ceiling. Then I use either Spackle or drywall compound and a putty knife filling any nail holes. After it dries I lightly sand so it blends in. I then prime those spots. Next I paint the ceiling and trim it out. Last I paint the walls and then trim them out. Getting the right nap roller and a good paint brush is worth it. Especially for the ceiling. I have tried to save money by buying cheap stuff and it took longer and didn't work as well. Good Luck!
Jennifer...I don't blame you for doing it yourself. I enjoy painting myself. You will need to move furniture to center of room if you have a room large enough. If not you may need to move some out for you can get around the room. Sheets will cover what you leave in there if you feel the need. Cover your floors with plastic, newspaper, etc. to prevent paint from getting on carpet or floor. Also you need to tape around doors and windows and baseboards plus crown molding it you have. I would suggest frog tape or other painters tape. The preparing takes some time but will save you in the long run. I use paint brushes to paint around the wood parts you taped. After you finish all that you can use a roller and things will go pretty quick. All your supplies can be purchased in the same area at Lowe's, Walmart, Home Depot, etc. Talk with a clerk and ask questions. Good luck and have fun. If your son is old enough he may be a great helper.
Start by taping along the ceiling and the baseboards. I like to cut in first around the windows/doors/ceilings/baseboards/etc. Then you can roll the rest!
Tinyshoes has my priority list. Get everything out of the room or as far from the walls as you can. Cover everything in the room with plastic drop cloths, especially the floor, furniture and trim, unless the trim will be the same color as the walls. I suggest the same neutral for each room so that you can move easily from room to room, saving paint and time. In later years, big bold posters or styrofoam surfboards or princess dresses can set the focus colors. In your room, your choices for bedding and curtains become the focus. Please yourself with your dream idea or your favorite color, adding to that. You will probably live with your wall colors for years. Love it!
I agree with most of the answers, but depending on the size of the room, a powered roller, taking paint directly from the can, can save HOURS. Years ago, I had occasion to paint the entire first floor ceiling and walls. Having chosen the same color for all, it was a breeze. I did the roller part in just about 4 hours. Of course the trim took much longer, and I did it FIRST.
I agree with all the information you have been given. I do not like paint rollers. I end up looking as if I have very strange colored freckles. I use a paint pad. They come in several sizes. Dip them in paint you have poured in a roller tray and lightly scrape off the excess into the tray. Work from top to bottom on the wall. I get great results and a nice smooth finish.
Move the furniture to the middle of the room and cover it with tarp or old sheets and blankets. Dust or vacuum around the ceiling & baseboards. Remove outlet covers, switchplates, hanging pictures & decor. Use drywall paste to fill in any holes or cracks & sand those spots to a smooth finish. Vacum the floor around the bottom of the walls. Using painters tape, tape off around the ceiling, baseboards, doors, windows etc... Now finally you can start painting! Using a paint brush, cut in ( paint ) around all the areas that your paint roller will not fit into, like where each wall meets another, around the ceiling, windows, doors, baseboards, etc. Now you can use your roller to paint your walls. Let it dry completely to determine if you think it needs a 2nd coat. Remember to use interior FLAT paint on the walls and interior SEMI GLOSS paint on all the trim, ( baseboards, windows, doors etc. ). In bathrooms, use semi gloss on ALL.
