Book came out years ago by a, believe it or not, a Harvard trained attorney, on cleaning everything in the house. Yes, DO vacuum the mattress every 3 months. Plus...sunshine kills odors. Vacuum it, then steam clean it. You could also a carpet cleaner that can be used on upholstery as well. Once it is completely dry put a mattress cover on it. I keep a cover on my mattress at all times. Helps with allergies.
