Will painting my cement cellar floor reduce humidity in the basement?
My house was built in the 1930's, and we painted the unfinished basement floor when we moved in 40 years ago. The paint has worn off, and I want to "finish" the basement, and put a rug on the floor. Is it better to paint the floor first to reduce the humidity? Thanks, Sharyn

Hi Sharyn, In my opinion it would. Painting the floor should seal it and block at least some moisture.
HEL THERE,
To be able to use your basement without humidity, you should have the whole room Tanked! Anything you put on the floor will draw the damp to it and form mold! If it is something you need to use and cannot afford to get it Tanked, an alternative might be to buy a dehumidifier and leave it on permanently. Whether it would cost more or less (in the long run) than getting the room Tanked I'm afraid I wouldn't know. It would depend on how long you intended to use it........ Sealing the floor would not be much good if the walls are not Tanked. Sorry.......
Hello Sharyn! Do you have a dehumidifier in your basement? I run two in my basement from late spring to fall to reduce the humidity otherwise my basement tends to smell musty. I find that I have to empty them nearly every day during the summer. You can paint the floor but I am not sure how much it will change the humidity levels in the basement.
No
You need a dehumidifier that will work great check square ft for size keep in mind it will make your bill ho up about 20 dollars a month but it works because mold ruins everything.
Paint will help - but only to a certain extent. Chances are you need to run a dehumidifier. Especially if you are in a humid climate.
My basement floor is over 100 years old in South Eastern, PA and I painted the floor in 2005 with Drylok concrete floor paint, GULL color latex base which is on the gray side and have had no problems with it. I have put a few coats on since then and still looks good Never got any peeling or moisture on floor.
