Ruth, if you mix a 50/50 solution of alcohol and water that will work as a very good cleaner. Dip a soft cloth in the mixture and scrub the windows well, then take another clean cloth and go over the area again if the glass is extremely dirty. Then dry quickly with another soft dry cloth. The alcohol evaporates rather quickly and will make the job easy peasey.

I find that using a microfiber cloth (you can buy several in a pack for cheap at Walmart) is great for removing smudges, lint, etc. I use one to wipe down the window once I spray it with window cleaner then another to dry it. Here are other good ideas

What ever you choose to use try this. Clean one side of the window wiping east to west and the other side north to south. This way you can easily see which side a smear is on.
