Use a 5 gallon pail for your tomato plants so this will permit you to put a tomato cage in it. Drill a hole, about 3 inches up from the bottom on either side for drainage. The space makes a nice reservoir in case it gets really hot and dry. Use good quality potting soil. Add some Epsom salts as the plant is growing. This helps to deter fungus and aids the plant. I spray paint the outside of my pots so that they look nice. The pails would be suitable for small trees. You can Shake and Feed granules from time to time to give the plants a boost.
