You didn't say how big your porch was. But go vertical. Can be as simple as using gutters/eavestrough either screwed to the house or attached to a simple frame. Stack up some different sized tubs, or hanging baskets or a combination, let your imagination run with it and have fun.

I would plant some bright colored annuals and also some herbs/veggies in various sized planting containers/pots in various heights. You could even put a bench or chair with a soft pillow and a little table, so you could sit out there and enjoy the flowers and some fresh air!
Find a few larger and colorful pots that go together. Add foundation plants that look good all year round like star jasmine or a lemon cypress.
Pots are easily planted with a thriller- something taller and interesting, filler- annuals and plants that add textureandinterest and spillers- trailing plants that fall down the sides.
In a small area think vertical, adding plants that climb or succulent boxes that attach to a wall.
Other attractive ceramic pots can be used for a tomato or two, beans or sugar snap peas.
Add a a trellis or two, a chair or two and perhaps an outside rug or artificial turf and it will come together and feel like home.
You could go vertical. There are lots of options that don't take up a lot of room. https://www.hometalk.com/posts/outdoor/garden/diy-herb-garden-tutorial-1450788
