What do I do with a long, skinny side yard?
It is about 20 feet long and 5 feet across. We have tried mulch, pea gravel, and all it does is produce knee high weeds (oh my aching back) and mud the dogs drag in. My back thanks you for any ideas and I would love to not have to mop up muddy dog prints everyday.

Sandy: I have a smaller yard, but solved the dog mud problem with laying down about 3" of sand, then topping that with a 2-3" layer of river stone. I used these stones:

Could you create an extra patio area with pavers?
Maybe you can add some raised gardens - buy a raised garden kit or two. You can fill the gardens with gardening soil and add pretty annuals to your area. Maybe something like this raised garden kit: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Frame-It-All-48-in-W-x-48-in-L-x-5-5-in-H-Brown-Composite-Raised-Garden-Bed/999922456
