I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.

I use toothpaste. Works well.
I also use toothpaste with nothing added, just the old fashioned kind. When you get into the hacks like the aluminum foil ones, it takes minute layers of the silver off of the piece and leaves a gray haze on the piece that can be hard to get off. If it is silverplate it could also damage the finish. Don't use anything with salt on silver, it will turn it black and it is very hard to get off. Soft stones like pearl, opal, turquoise and such need a tender touch to keep from damaging them from chemicals. Light warm wash with a soft rag will clean such stones.
