I have wicker furniture that has sat outside and the varnish has peeled off and looks like oxidized. Do I need to remove the oxidation before I re-laquer? If so how do I get rid of it?

An effective all-purpose cleaning solution for outdoor wicker furniture is 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap and two cups of warm water. Wipe the wicker with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse away the soapy suds with a garden hose. For mold and mildew removal, add one cup of white vinegar to the solution.
If you plan to stain use a gel stain. If you just plan to seal use a marine grade varnish or polyurethane. Helmsman Spar Urethane is a good one. Use the spray to get in all the knooks and crannies.
Yes, you should clean it first. Warm dishwater and a brush, then hose off. Paint once completely dry.

Hi there, Yes clean down and dry off thoroughly before adding another finish!
Hi Katherine, use a deglosser Using liquid sandpaper/deglosser or sandpaper helps dull any old paint, gloss or varnish, preps the area for a new coat of paint or varnish and helps bond the new finish to prevent it from chipping off easily.
