Absolutely avoid growing ivy against your home and garage. It damages concrete and mortar, over time, and leaves its marks on bricks. It's a hiding place for wasps, chipmunks, etc. It can choke out other plants, as well.
Ask anyone who has had damage from ivy in the past and they'll strongly advise against planting it. It can take years to fully eradicate.
