How do I keep a black snake from climbing up the pole to get the eggs?

I had a fight with a snake the other day. He slithered up the pole and got the baby bluebird eggs. Then after I finally managed to run him off he went around to the front nest and got those eggs too. So what can I use to keep him from slithering up those poles again?

Use vaseline, a simple slippery way to stop this. Can't navigate up the pole.
Yes, Vaseline will make the pole too slick to go up, easy solution.
Another vote for vaseline. It is cheap and won't harm the animals.
