One of my neighbors used the 12" square stepping stones. It was meant to be "temporary" but it turned out so well, it is still in place and she has added onto it too over the years.
Dig down about a foot in the area square we’re you want the patio to go you will need pea gravel level it all out then sand level that then place pavers in the patern you want you would need a edge for sides to hold them in place and after all set put sand into cracks with a broom
I would use crushed gravel instead of pea gravel under the sand. Pea gravel never compacts. Crushed is also cheaper. The sand layer allows the stones to be leveled. There is also a polymeric sand mixture that can used to fill the gaps between pavers. It is put in the gaps and watered. The mix will harden and lock the pavers together.
