Has anyone built a retractable shade pergola?
I would like to build a pergola with a retractable shade (kind of like roman shades but over the top). I know I can buy a kit from Home Depot but the challenge is that I want to mount a porch swing as well and the kit ones are not sturdy enough.

You’re smart in seeing that the kits aren’t going to be holding a porch swing.
It’s not only the weight, it’s the Live Load and what it does to the structure and the footings when you’re swinging.
As a kid, I knew many kids whose swingsets would lift out of the ground, when we were working hard at swinging. And they’re steel.
I don’t know if any of the free plans that you can get online, that are designed for these kinds of loads. You’ll have to look.
The free plans usually have a ton of disclaimers & I would see if the City would give me a “courtesy Plans review” on any free plans. That protects your liability.
When the City gives you their “take” and if you end up needing to hire a design professional, after you sketch out what you want, to change,
Then
When I do this kind of work, I use National Building Code-approved Span Tables, Footings design & Construction Methodologies.
If your design doesn’t exceed the above-noted standards, then you don’t need formal Calculations & I don’t need to charge for them. Your pro should also address site conditions, such as Soils Type.
