Paint is my least favorite option because it has to be touched up often on the treads.
If the wood is in good shape, you can stain and poly the treads and risers or only the treads and do something interesting with the risers like wallpaper, paint, or tile.
Yes I do
I need to do this in our home as well.
1)Take up the rug off the stairs if that is what you have.
2)See what type of wood you have on the treads.
Ours is pine and even though it is real wood, my husband wants to replace it because pine is such a soft wood.
3)Consider replacing the treads depending on the type of wood.
In my home, I need to sand down the baseboard molding. The many years of paint build up makes that molding look OLD and dirty.
3)Sand down all baseboard molding.
In my home the railing was just painted. We were trying to do a quick job and had the handrail painted a dark ebony color. Even though the painters said it would be great because a lacquer was used, it was a big mistake to paint the railing. Only 2 years later and the paint is starting to scrape off in spots where anything brushes against it or kids scrape at it with their fingernails.
4) Sand down the railing and stain it and Seal the handrail with a polyurethane!
I love dark treads, white spindles, and a dark handrail. I have been looking at magazine pictures and the dark stair treads and dark handrail don't have to match the color of the hardwood floor (if you have one). This is something to consider and opens up some options if you thought you couldn't have dark because you have a lighter tone floor.
5) consider stain colors for your stair treads and hand rail.
6) Stain and seal!
I love wainscoting in the stairway.
7) Consider any wainscoting you could put on the wall to add interest.

I would paint the stairs but if that is not an option I would sand and stain the tread and paint the risers. Anther idea is to lay a runner rug up the stairs.
