Can you use liquid nails to put up ceramic tile then grout it instead of spreading ceramic adhesive all over the back?

What are you putting it up on? You can butter the back of tiles with tile thin set instead of doing entire wall, it's just quicker . Liquid Nails may not stick that well to concrete board and lay down as,flat.

No. You need a good surface bond between the tile and substrate. Thinset goes on the wall, grooved with a tile trowel. Large format tile needs the back buttered with thinset for added bond. The size and weight of large tile needs extra bonding. Small format tile does not need the back buttered. Buttering the back of tile and installing on a wall does not guarantee good thinset coverage. Leaving voids with no thinset and areas with too much thinset. It will fail.

You need a backer board and use tile adhesive and then grout after the tile sits here are some ideas
