How can I stop my cat from scratching the carpet?
I just moved into a new apartment that has been redone with new carpet and my cat wants to sharpen his claws in it. He has several things for this, a cardboard type and a rope and carpet scratch board but prefers the new carpet. Can anyone help me solve this problem? He is 12 years old and part maincoon, big cat.

Hi Ginny,
Wish you had sent a picture of your beautiful cat!
Here's a link and hopefully you can get good results from it. It seems he wants to use the new carpet because of the feeling on his claws. Was wondering if you can get new carpet samples the same as or close to in texture as what is on the floor now and attach it to something he can be redirected to?

If you keep his claws clipped and he still exhibits this behavior, then talk to your vet about stress/anxiety reducing remedies for the cat. The cat could be experiencing stress or anxiety from the move and scratching the carpet could be his way of telling you. Some cats (like some people) do not handle change in routine or scenery well. Especially an older cat.
