Suggestions for Large and deep Alcove/niche in living room ?
Need help with how to decorate around a tv in this space. It's a deep Alcove next to the fireplace that goes from the floor to the ceiling!
It's easier to arrange the furniture with just the one focal point. I can't think of a disadvantage.
Heat rises, so ensure it doesn't get too hot. Our fireplace is gas with a glass window and a heat fan that blows air into the room. The TV is above a mantle. The other disadvantage could be the material of the wall above. You need to securely fasten the TV to a solid support and run the wires. Putting a TV above the fireplace eliminates wasted floor space, but the viewing angle may be uncomfortable. Our wall above the fireplace is sheetrock and the contractor installed a tube to run wires inside the wall and put a power plug behind the TV. Wood burning fireplaces are one of the worst options for heating a room. Our last house had one and we never had a fire in the fireplace for 20 years. It was decoration only and we only put candles in there.
The one thing that would be the most important is to know if the brickwork heats up when you have the fireplace going and how much of the heat coming out of the fireplace will heat the air in the area the TV would be in. That would damage the TV and it may affect how the TV works and how long it would live.. Also to be considered would be if the TV would be too high to be enjoyed without craving your neck if you have to sit relatively close with the seating around the fireplace. You also will have to attach a mound to the wall, if it is brick or whatever the fireplace is covered with, you will have to find out how to secure the Mount in the wall so that it handles the weight. The main advantage I see is enjoying the fireplace while I enjoy watching TV.
The heat coming from a fireplace could be detrimental to your tv. Another thing to consider is how high the tv will be mounted. It's very difficult to design a room with two focal points so having the two items on the same wall eliminates that dilemma. Be sure the wiring for everything runs through the wall.
A TV above the fireplace is really high to look at. Normally, it's placed at about eye level from where you sit. I wouldn't do it for that reason alone.
