You are so lucky to have such a tree!
It all depends where you live, specifically the range of zones 9-11 works well for oranges. The orange tree can be started in zone 8, but does have to come in during the winter, they do not do well with cold weather.
Right now in zone 5-Maryland we have Meyer lemon trees in containers, they come in during the winter and out in the late spring. This works well.
