I want to change the color of the brick on my house from dark to light (match the vinyl siding). What kind of paint should I use? Or should I stain it?

lower Michigan

I don't have a before picture, but the bottom half of our house used to be orange brick. Please use solid masonry stain instead of paint. Stain soaks in to the brick. Paint sits on top and will eventually flake off. Stain will not flake off. We stained our brick 10 years ago and it still looks great. Use the thickest nap roller available and roll slowly to prevent splattering. You will also need a thick, wide high quality brush to get into the areas the roller won't go. You will need to coats. Leave the bottom portion near the ground until you have done the higher areas to avoid getting dirt in your roller and brush. You will love how much more updated your home will look once you stain the brick. We now have a new dark charcoal roof and are getting new doors painted pale aqua so our home actually looks better than this picture shows. Consider painting your garage door the same color as your siding to make it been in instead of calling attention to it.

Talk to the folks at Sherwin williams or benjamin moore. They will point you in the right direction.

  • I've been researching the best masonry paint for the bottom of our home recently. This one has good reviews and it's made for brick and stucco. https://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-1-gal-MS-39-Crystal-White-Elastomeric-Masonry-Stucco-and-Brick-Exterior-Paint-06801/204166300 The only drawback is that it has to be special ordered.

Painting brick is generally ill advised by most stone masons and many better contractors. Brick needs to breathe.
