Hi Judy! Oh do I love contact paper. Back in the 70s when I was first married, I used contact paper on so many things. I covered old crisco cans with contact paper, I used contact paper on old worn out countertops in rental places, you can use contact paper to make doll houses, and so much more.

I've used it to cover shelves on a baker's rack. I was ready to ditch the oak finish, but didn't know if I wanted to paint...I covered with contact paper instead and it really lightened it up!

I slowly peel off an edge and then adhere it to whatever you are putting it on. Slowly pull the backing off, ensuring to hold down on the contact paper that has already been secured to the item. Use a credit card to smooth out any bubbles or a pin to pop air bubbles.
To cover shelves, the riser of a stair, in a photo frame, on a wood block for decor!
