Hot water heaters are expensive and so is the labor. The hot water heater alone can run upwards of $1000.
I replaced mine and increased the size by 20 gallons for about $1100.
To get your best estimate check with your local plumbing businesses. They will sell you the water heaters they keep in stock or you can just ask about installation and purchase your water heater elsewhere.
Far too much money. I replaced myself. Mine had to be replaced in 2015 and I refused to pay more than the cost of the water heater itself to swap them out. I had already drained it, disconnected it and called my junk hauler. They wanted $750. I did it myself and it took about an hour. BUT in some states you must hire a licensed plumber to do this for you.
Some areas mandate installation by a licensed plumber. A 40 gallon tank, installed, was almost $1000.00 in the Pittsburgh, PA area.
