How to secure new post caps?
Old post caps were secured with nasty black gooey stuff which eventually dried up...leaving caps loose and a mess ....after I remove the caps and scrape off all the residue...what can I use to secure new ones?

I don't care for glue for this kind of thing because weather makes a mess of most adhesives and sometimes caps need a clean up or repair.
I drill ill small pilot holes and attach with a small exterior nails or exterior screws. Nails when the caps are to stay on )like soils cedar) and screws if they need to be taken off (like copper ones to clean.)
