Stanley (the tool manufacturer) puts out a soft-cover book "Complete Decks". I bought mine for $19.95 at Home Depot. Step-by-step instructions, pictures, planning, etc. A very thorough guide to the process. Because I lived on the Oregon coast and wanted a maintenance-free deck, I opted to spend the extra for composite decking material (Trex, for me but there are others) and used stainless steel deck screws. I would never have to paint or stain nor worry about the fasteners rusting out. Just be sure to hand select your pressure treated framing lumber to minimize bowing and twists. Expend the extra effort to make sure your concrete pedestals are accurately aligned and level. A lot of work and a lot of time but any additional effort and love you put in up front to the project will repay itself in the satisfaction of a job well done and a long lasting improvement to your property.
