Check each of the sprinkler head’s height. A head that’s too high is more easily damaged by the mower and a potential tripping hazard. Check the manufacturer's suggestions for the optimal sprinkler head height; you may be able to adjust the height lower so that the mower clears the head.
Run the mower over each sprinkler with the motor off. If you have a “pop-up” sprinkler, the mower blade may not come into contact with the head while it’s below the soil’s surface. In this case, mow over the heads if you’re confident they won’t suffer damage.
Mow the lawn as usual, paying attention to avoid the flag and above-ground sprinkler heads. If the sprinkler heads are permanently above ground, stay away from them completely to prevent unnecessary damage.
Raise the lawn mower blade height. Adjusting the height allows you to clear sprinkler heads that would have otherwise been damaged.
If you are paying someone to mow your lawn, they need to repair and replace what they break. It's that simple. If they refuse, fire them and hire some else that is more careful and respectful. Walk through with them and show them each sprinkler head and impress upon them that they need to be mindful. Most "gardeners" these days are cheap, lazy, uneducated mow and blow guys that don't know the difference between a weed and a plant. They want to be in and out as quickly as possible and have no pride in their work.
The way we do it is putting decorative rocks, and , or plants around them. You could also collect some coffee cans and cover them by pressing into the ground. ( Or make them do it) when they come.
You need to adjust either the sprinkler heads or the mower blade. Broken sprinkler heads are a pain so in the end your work will be worth it.
