Hi Tammy - These are two articles that show how we took our small and sad deck and turned it into a gorgeous entertainment space complete with a pergola. Not instructions, more just the before and after. Hope they help with some inspiration! Hugs, Holly

At my previous residence on the Oregon coast, I built a 500 sf deck. Before purchasing anything else, I went to Home Depot and invested $20 in the book Complete Decks by Stanley (the hand tool manufacturer). Because of the harsh salt-air environment, I chose to use a composite decking (Trex) and stainless steel deck screws. No yearly stain touch-up, no splintering, etc. Yeah! It made the job far, far easier to know what each step should be. Be sure to be diligent in selecting straight and true pressure treated lumber for your beams, joists and posts. Have fun with your project; I did with mine.
