You can roll it on, just need to cut in the perimeter with a brush. Wash the floor down with TSP and then send the sheen off. For the most durable finish use oil based primer and paint. Lighyly sand between coats.
Just know if you want to go back it will be more pricy to refinish and you are lessening the value of your hardwood floor for resale.
