I used cinder blocks to make a raised flower bed. I dry laid them on the edge of the area I wanted to make the bed. First dig out the grass in the area you want to put the blocks, make sure it is level and tamped down. I then put newspaper in the ditch to prevent weeds from growing up through the blocks. Then you place the blocks like you were laying a wall so that the upper level of block seems don't match up with the lower block seams. I only went two levels of blocks and didn't put any stakes in the blocks and over the years mine of titled some so I wished I had put my fence stakes through them in the beginning. Then they would have stayed straighter and I could have my fence (chicken wire) across the top to keep the critters out. I put dirt up to the top of the first cinder block row, planted my plants and then put mulch on top. Each year as I start the garden for a new season I put down new mulch. It has worked great.
