Hi, Jessica!
Shiplap can definitely be painted! Use a good primer such as Kilz or Bullseye for the best results. Good luck with your project! I hope this helps...
Jessica: Cher is right... and then use a GOOD latex paint -- 2 coats!
Make sure you clean first, perhaps with TSP. Then prime and paint. If you have knots you want to use a primer that will seal them. Kilz Original works better for those than the latex version. But if you don't mind them bleeding through you can go with the Kilz2. Bullseye is really good for sealing.
The best tip I've seen is to burn the wood knots lightly with a blow torch before painting. This reduces the sap/pitch that bleeds through to almost nothing. You'll still want to prime after.
Paint between the gaps first using a paintbrush and then roll over the rest of the shiplap with a paint roller. Best of luck!
