its been done- primer, paint, and if it has spaces like paneling-do the spaces first.

I love painted headboard. Prime with oil based primer, lightly sand, then paint with oil based paint for a very prof look.

Hi Jackie! Chalk based or mineral based paints work great for paint headboards! No sanding or priming required. :) Some of my favorite brands are Dixie Belle, Jolie, Annie Sloan and Valspar (you can get this at Lowes all work great!
Here is a head board I am currently working on! You can seal with Clear wax or a waterbased poly! :)
